I've actually had this problem since I built the damn thing but I feel the need to spark conversation.
For some reason my desktop freezes up when ever I try and play a video file or DvD. It doesn't matter what program I use either Media Player, Winamp, Quicktime, they all have to same effect. Everything just locks up for some reason. The only exception to the rule is YouTube, for some reason I can still watch YouTube videos.
Any one have a clue why this happens.
That's a bit strange... if it were just the DVD I would blame the drive being used. If it's something on your hard drive, that makes it a good deal more strange. The only other culprit I can think of would be your video card, or possibly the sound. YouTube would be different because it's not directly accessing the video or sound like most media players do.
Hmm... I'm gonna go ahead and blaim the video card then cause it gives me a reason to upgrade to a Geforce 6800.
Sadly I can't go higher since I'm on AGP and the 7000+ are all PSI-X
Look around for 7800 GS's. They're AGP. I've got one and it seriously kicks ass.
You'll need a decent PSU and CPU to handle a 7800GS.
Well I just got a 6800 today, and a Capture Card, so I'm set for a while.
Where did you manage to find one? I had thought they were nearly a myth by now.
Well it was a christmas gift, but if I remember correctly I did find a link to one online via pricewatch.com. That is assuming you meant the 6800.
Well, it's a good card. The 7800 has the advantage of being on the G70 core, but they're just about as hard to find now.
Well it seems the 6800 fixed the problem. As a bonus I just found out this thing it multi-regional. I guess I made a good choice when selecting a CD/DVD player when I built this thing. The only down side is the card was so damn big I had to move my Hard Drive just to fit it in there.
Next time I want to upgrade I'm just gonna build a whole new PC.
